The Second St Ouen’s Cricket Pundit

Alan Le Bihan, what does he know about cricket?  I’m a Northerner and speak my mind, say what you think and comment on what you see.  Don’t pussy foot about.

Now you lot, read on.

Thoughts

On myself , a top order batsman and change bowler who plays regularly for the 1st XI (when not playing golf in France).

Batting can go from the sublime to the extreme - some good shots and some bloody awful ones.  Technique and ability in abundance, but never materialises into runs.

Bowling known locally for dragging, no not cross dressing, but the back foot follow through.  Fakes wickets on damp, slow tracks but often suffers on flat, dry strips.

Can be good gulley fielder, but distracts himself and other fielders through flatulence.

Pundits Overall Rating: 8/10 - if more energy were put into his cricket
rather than his rear, performance would improve.  Recently cemented good opening partnerships, playing steady whilst other end slogs.  Ideal bowler for wet tracks.

A middle order batsman and change bowler who plays regularly for the 2nd XI and occasionally for the 1st team.

Batting can be described as irratic, with the potential to 'whack' a few quick runs late in the innings.  Lack of foot movement hinders strokes.

Right arm medium bowler who prefers wind behind to maximise his arm ball which is slightly quicker.

Takes regular wickets but often expensive.  Would gain extra yard of pace with a trim to his locks.

Pundits Overall Rating: 7/10 - 2nd XI Cowboy who misses games regularly through injury, often split-enz.  Keep swinging.

John Douglas or the 'Scuttler'

Late order batsman and change bowler who
play occasionally for the 1st team.

John's main asset is his short stature, which benefits his bowling.  The low ball trajectory he produces can be invaluable on low flat wickets and also on 'puddins'!

Stock ball - the skidder.  Also produces lateral movement, generally down the leg-side resulting in inner thigh bruising to wicket keepers.

Pundits Overall Rating: 7/10 - has potential to be match winner with both bat and ball.  Hidden in the field through lack of pace.  Carry-on-scuttler.

Thoughts

Player

Top order batsman who should never bowl and rarely does.  Regular 1st team member.

Stylish batsman who takes longer to walk out to the crease than he often spends at it.  Quickest he's been seen to move was a single run when the
ball was 'dead' a few years back.

A text- book player with the ability to middle the ball all round the wicket.  Recently under achieved, failing to capitalize on the odd score of 20 or 30.

Pundits Overall Rating: 8.5/10 - the potential to score runs consistently, a good pair hands, immaculate kit bag including fruit salad.  Plays too many rash shots often leading to soft dismissals.

More application required.

Mike Coward

Middle order batsman and change bowler who plays regularly for the 1st team.

Batting very much in the mould of Lance Kluserner - no style, no foot movement but big hitter.  Can play most shots in the book - the publication being the farmers monthly.

Useful change bowler who can turn his arm at medium / fast (long hops) or finger spin (long hops).

A good pair of 'buckets' makes up for non-existent ground fielding.

Pundits Overall Rating: 8/10 - Stalwart of St Ouens CC amassing many runs and numerous wickets over the years.  A well respected figure and fine slogger.

A sad loss to the club if he, as reported, joins the over 40's.

Andrew (or Brownie) represents one of our pposition teams at weekends, but kindly turns out for St Ouens in the evening league.

His batting is not really geared towards evening league cricket, being in the Christopher Tavere style.  Can hold up 'one end' whilst running the other out.

Occasional spin bowler with a high action generating uncertainty in both the batsman’s and fielders minds six or four.

Enjoys officiating in the evenings, and never one to shy away from the dubious decisions.

Pundits Overall Rating: 7/10 - a dedicated and committed cricketer who plays within, and for himself.  Can chip in with valuable wickets at the right time (whilst umpiring!).
