The Inaugural St Ouens CC Golf Invitational

On Saturday 14th June 2003 the Inaugural St Ouens CC Golf Invitational was held at the Les Ormes Golf and Leisure Village St Brelade.

Although the field was small, 10 in total, the quality was there to see, Horton, Douglas, Journeaux and Moyse just to name a few.  Most of our readers will have heard a lot about this round, that drive, my club or do you remember that putt.  Never the hook, slice, yips or shank for these seasoned pros.

So a keenly contested competition was expected as the day arrived.  Thunderstorms overnight had cleared the air and made the greens more receptive.

Although the friendly General Manager of the local Mazda dealership had not provided a car for a hole in one, the expectation was immense as the first ball was driven down the fairway.

No one could see where the eventual winner would come from until a scorching back 9 from Martin Amy who won the overall competition with 41 stableford points.

This was not the end of the prizes as the longest drive and nearest to the pin were still to be won.

Karl Moyse won the longest drive, some said that he look so at ease with Big Bertha in his hands, just like most Saturday Night others said.  Well done Karl.

Our Hon Sec and organiser of the day, Paul Horton, was nearest the pin placing his ball around 11 feet from the hole.  Again, well done Strawberry Striker, although to 3 putt from there must have disappointed him judging by distance the putter was thrown where it almost challenged the longest drive.  Deep breaths and count to 10. An email from Moyse on the eve of the competition must have stuck in Horton’s mind.

It read ‘He couldn’t putt for toffee’

A Late Lunch was taken at The Bar and the evening closed.

Hat-Trick

Congratulations to Karl Moyse following his exceptional performance at the weekend, 3rd May 2003, by taking 3 in 3.

He bowled both Steve Dewhurst and Chris Batchelor and whilst Karl’s team mates gave a guard of honour to our Club President, T Michael Coward now an Old Codger, he focused on the job in hand and trapped the Prez L.B.W first ball, thanks Mike.
