A brief history of St Ouen’s
C.C (and something about Cricket in Jersey, Channel Islands)……. St Ouen’s Cricket Club was formed
when the members of the St Ouen’s Football Club decided that they should
continue their sporting activities throughout the year. The Football and Cricket Clubs have
since split and the Cricket club celebrated its 25th birthday in
1993. Club has grown and now runs 1st,
Reserves and Midweek Evening League Elevens.
The 1st XI playing in Division 1 of the Jersey Weekend League
on Saturdays with the 2nd XI playing in Division 2 of the same
competition on Sundays. The Evening League side often rides
high in Division 1 wining the 8 ball over League title in 1999 and the
Knockout Cup in 2000. Although always referred to the
Western’s or the Western Parish, St Ouen’s do not play cricket in this
parish. Unlike the cricket clubs in
the UK, St Ouen’s and most Jersey cricket clubs do not have their own
grounds. However in Jersey, cricket is played
in three main places, Grainville, FB Fields (FB1, FB2 and yes you’ve have
guessed it FB3) and Les Quennevais (LQ1 and LQ2). Saturday cricket is played at Grainville, FB1 and LQ1. On Sunday, the Division 2 Clubs also have
the pleasure of LQ2. Evening League Clubs can also find
themselves on FB2 and FB3. Due to the
quantity of evening league cricket, all matches are played on all-weather
carpet. As you can see Jersey has only
limited space to play cricket.
Weekend League cricket is therefore split over two days, Saturdays
have the games played in Division 1 and the Division 2 teams play on
Sundays. The Evening League games are
normally scheduled from Monday to Thursday and occasionally Friday. |
