St
Ouen’s CC vs SCF in JEP KO Final at Grainville on 29 June 2004
SCF 170 for 2 in 15
overs
SCF
won the toss and elected to bat with both Island Openers available; Hague and
Carlyon took guard but could not have expected to be facing the 6’ 4” and a bit
paceman Mo Kemp and the stocky offy Danny Blasco.
But Carlyon could not lay a bat
on the balls received from Kemp (0 for 15 off 3 overs) and when Hague laid his
bat on a ball from Blasco it looped to gully but unfortunately was spilled by
former Murratti goalkeeper, Jamie Brewster.
After Kemp and Blasco (0 for 21
off 3 overs) had completed their spells SCF had only 38 on the board. But things changed for St Ouen as the Island
openers took up the challenge from Dendy Thompson (0 for 45), Paul Horton (0
for 46) and Stuart Ramskill (1 for 38) and when their innings closed at 170 for
2 would have appeared to have won the battle.
Rob Tewkesbury and Jamie
Brewster knew St Ouen’s would have to get off to a flyer but Tewkesbury was returned
to the pavilion with only 4 to his name.
Brewster then unleashed all his might and what seemed like every
delivery from former Island Bowlers Nicky Jewell and especially Mark Reynolds
disappeared out of the ground, 22 coming off the first over from Reynolds. SCF did not know what had hit them, it was
like shock and awe all over again. The
fielders ran for cover to the boundaries but Brewster was hitting the ball onto
the 2nd tier of the clubhouse roof in an innings of such venom that had been
rarely seen before. He was supported by
Ward Jenner (40). Brewster was removed
in the 9th over for 62 scored off only just 34 balls. Unfortunately, Jenner also perished in the
same over and with new batsmen unable to keep up with the rate and wickets
falling regularly St Ouen's were all out just 10 runs short of a thrilling
victory.
