Senior Cup Final

St Ouen’s CC           135 for 8 in 40 Overs

SCF                            96 all out in 34.3 overs

St Ouen’s CC have been convincingly beaten in both weekend league encounters with SCF this year so the Senior Cup Final held on Saturday at Grainville would not be easy for the Western parish side with 4 regulars, Rob Tewkesbury, Danny Blasco, Gary Kynman and Dave Parry all missing.  However, St Ouen were positive from the start and decided to bat after winning the toss and seeing that the track looked as though it would break up.

Martin Amy, also very positive, dispatched 3 boundaries off the opening SCF attack of Nick Jewell and Mark Reynolds.  Jewell removed Amy when he sliced the ball to Ben Silva at point.  This brought St Ouen’s captain Richard Gomersall in with Dave Clark.  They added only 7 in 12 overs where the bowlers and fielders dominated but Clark knew that wickets in hand at the death would prove a winning formula.

Clark, Gomersall and Craig Douglas all departed with the score on 35 and this brought to the crease Mark Tribe and all rounder Paul Horton.  Horton always raises his game to take on the weekend league champions and took the attack to the bowlers.  If the ball was there they were both prepared to hit it but where still watchful of a pitch that would often spit like a cobra.

This stand would set the foundations of the 135 for 8 but would ultimately take the game away from SCF.  Horton was removed for an excellent 38 by ex-St Ouen all rounder Dave Morfee when he was caught at short extra cover by Trevor Rousseau.  Tribe (51) then the senior partner took on Horton’s role and was eventually removed by Steve Carlyon caught behind by Simon Short with one ball remaining.

A tight opening spell and holding any chances offered the SCF batsman would be key to a St Ouen’s win although Island openers Matt Hague and Steve Carlyon were in no mood to let the opening attack of Karl Moyse and Grant Phillips bowl at them with 17 coming from the first 2 overs.  However, South African Phillips nipped one off the seam to take the edge of Hague’s bat in his second over and moving smartly to his right Dave Clark took the catch in front of first slip.  Moyse them removed the other opener in the seventh over as they applied the pressure.  Horton was introduced and removed Dave Morfee for 10 in a 4 over spell conceding just 2 runs.

Ben Silva and Tony Carlyon stayed at the cease and this could have proved to be St Ouen’s downfall but they did not want to let this opportunity slip through their fingers.  Carlyon (20) was removed by Craig Douglas and Simon Short (0), Paul Carberry (5) and Ben Silva (13) followed in quick succession.

Mark Reynolds looked as though he was going to spoil the St Ouen’s party with a hard hitting 21 but Paul Horton caught and bowled his ex-team mate and Karl Moyse re-introduced at the other end removed Jewell first ball and Dodti 2 balls later.

Albert Brown awarded the Trophy to St Ouen’s captain Richard Gomersall and Ray Wilson made Mark Tribe man of the match.
